After the destruction of New Smyrna in December 1835 at the onset of the Second Seminole War, a chain of forts quickly rose across the Florida peninsula in 1836. Fort New Smyrna, the easternmost of these outposts, remained a key military presence for nearly two decades. Join the museum and Executive Director Greg Holbrook to uncover the events leading to the town’s destruction and explore how Fort New Smyrna figured into the U.S. government’s efforts to secure a new state—amid fierce resistance from Native peoples defending their land.
